He also faces more serious charges contrary to section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act

A 27-year-old man has appeared in court charged with having quantities of different drugs for sale or supply in Eyre Square.

Michael Byrne, with an address Moorefield Park, Newbridge, County Kildare, is charged with 12 offences contrary to the Misuse of Drugs Act.

At Galway District Court, Garda Cormac McAvock gave evidence of charging the accused who made no reply to any of the charges after caution.

Sergeant Claire Heneghan told the court the Director of Public Prosecutions directed summary disposal of the charges in the district court.

Garda McAvock outlined a summary of the alleged facts and said it will be alleged Byrne was found in possession of quantities of seven different controlled drugs with an estimated combined total value of €1749.

Judge Fiona Lydon accepted jurisdiction to hear the case in the district court.

Byrne told the court he is usually represented by solicitor Michael Cunningham and said he was aware of the ongoing legal aid dispute that has led to a withdrawal of services by solicitors.

Judge Lydon adjourned the matter to December 19.

In the case, Michael Byrne is charged that on December 2, 2025 at Eyre Square, he was in possession of alprazolam, hexahydrocannabinol, MDMA, ketamine, cocaine, cannabis herb and cannabis resin, all offences contrary to section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

He also faces more serious charges contrary to section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act relating to the alleged possession for sale or otherwise supply of quantities of cannabis herb, cannabis resin, MDMA, ketamine and cocaine.
