Date Published: 09-Jan-2011
There has been a series of crashes last night and this morning on icy roads across Galway county and in the city.
In the past few hours there have been a number of crashes on the new M18 motorway between Gort and Crusheen and motorists are asked to avoid this route at present, if possible.
Gort Gardai say this new motorway is to be gritted within the next hour but due to a number of minor crashes there so far today traffic has been severely disrupted on this route.
Last night, just before 8 o'clock an elderly woman had a lucky escape in a single vehicle crash near Kiltulla, Loughrea.
The woman's car left the road and two units of Loughrea Fire Brigade, the Gardai, ambulance and other emergency services personel were quickly on the scene.
But while the woman was traumatised in the incident she did not suffer any serious injuries.
Roads around Ballinasloe, Mountbellew and Ballygar are particularly dangerous today as are roads in the Tuam area, especially sideroads.
Roads in Corofin and Corrandulla are very bad as are many sideroads in teh Dunmore, Glenamaddy and Milltown areas.
In the city the Gardai say many roads in housing estates are in a very dangerous condition and roads in the Knocknacarra area has been described as particularly bad.
In Connemara all road are said to be very slippy today, particularly the side roads.
