CRACKDOWN ON UNRULY LOCAL AUTHORITY TENANTS ACROSS COUNTY

Date Published: 25-Apr-2012
Galway County Council has warned of a major crackdown on troublesome local authority tenants across the county.
It follows the presentation of the council's revised anti-social behaviour strategy at this week's meeting.
Director of Services Eugene Cummins said that only a small minority of the tenants in the county's two thousand houses are breaching the law.
However, he warned firm action will be taken where necessary as the council works with other agencies such as the gardai and the HSE.
Fine Gael Cllr Tom McHugh said a local authority house in the Dunmore area has been wrecked on two occasions with huge refurbishment cost to the council and such troublesome tenants should be held accountable.
Cllr Seán Canney added that neighbours are the victims and that implementation of sanctions will not be possible without sufficient housing liaison officers.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Cllr Tom McHugh says the people who fail to respect property should not be supported.
