The Mayor of County Galway says the closure of two AIB branches in Portumna and Carraroe will only add to the burden of businesses.

Thomas Welby, who has a business in Oughterard, experienced similiar difficulties when the bank closed its branch there some years ago.

AIB announced 67 closures nationwide yesterday, in response to a fall in demand for branch services.

The Portumna and Carraroe branches will close their doors this October.

The Carraroe AIB had been operating a two day service, while the Portumna branch was open five days.

Services will be transferred to the local Post Offices including facilities to lodge cheques and moblie banks will be in operation.

Mayor Thomas Welby, who lives in Oughterard, says this initiative will help resolve some of the difficulties facing businesses
