Galway County Council says it can only take enforcement action to have housing estates completed after the expiry of planning permission.

Councillor Bridie Willers raised the issue of unfinished housing estates at this months meeting of Galway County Council.

She claims there are at least three housing estates in Gort and more in Loughrea where services such as lighting and sewerage are not functional.

In response, the Council said that the developer normally has 5 years from the date of grant of permission to complete the works.

Under the planning and Development Act of 2010, a provision was introduced to allow for an extension of duration of up to a further 5 years.

Councillor Willers says many developers may already have applied for estates to be taken in charge
