Galway County Council is working with its debtors to recoup as much money as possible owed to the local authority.

Almost 35 million euro is owed to Galway Councils in development levies, rates and water charges.

The County Council is owed 20 million euro, while the City Council is owed 14 and a half million euro.

The County Council has a deficit of 100 thousand euro on a turnover of 350 million euro in 2010.

In 2009, all Councils were given a directive to maintain "strict control" of their budgets.

Reports today suggest that local authorities across the country are still not following this directive.

Head of Finance with Galway County Council, Ger Mullarkey, says they're very 'savings-savvy'.
