Galway County Council says new changes to Galway fire services will not impact on public safety.

Director of Housing and Emergency Services Eugene Cummins is speaking out after SIPTU trade union threatened industrial action if new arrangements for part time firemen are not deferred.

The plans which involve extending the city limit to a radius of 5 miles before the part time crew is called in are expected to be implemented from tomorrow. (DEC 1)

The current radius is two and a half miles, before crew are asked to be on standby at the Claddagh based fire station.

The Council argues that the existing boundary does not co-incide with the administrative boundary of the city council.
