The County Council is defending its position regarding the deployment of the Galway Fire Service.

The Council has come in for heavy criticism from local politicans for not allowing the Brigade to pump water in flooded areas.

The fire service is capable of pumping over 1000 gallons of water per minute.

But a spokesperson for the Galway Fire Service said it's being deployed in situations where there's a threat to life only.
