Revised proposals to build three houses for the elderly on green space in Corrib Park has been rejected by residents. The city council originally wanted to build 6 houses on the site but have reduced this to three in the wake of strong local opposition. The councils alternative plans for the site were announced by Director of Services for housing Joe O Neill on Friday. However residents are still unhappy with the idea of any houses being built as they want their green space protected. The land is currently zoned residential but local councillor Colette Connolly has submitted a motion to Galway city council to re-zone the land as recreational and amenity. The Labour councillor is hoping to pass her motion at next Monday's city council meeting.Councillor Connolly says there are vacant houses all over the city that could be used to accomodate the elderly.
