Corinthians spoiled the 90th birthday celebrations of Galwegians on St Patrick’s Day when retaining the Glynn Cup in the annual rugby tournament between the two clubs.

The event was held in perfect conditions with hundreds of mini-rugby players from Galwegians and Corinthians taking part in the proceedings, with 12 teams took part in the main event from seniors down to U-13, as well as the ladies teams.

The winning teams were awarded one point for a win, and Corinthians retained the Glynn Cup when running out 7-5 winners on the day.

Proceedings started with the 3rds teams doing battle, with the visitors drawing first blood. The U-19 game ended all square but Corinthians U16’s gained another point in their contest.

’Wegians won the next three contests with their U-14,U-21 and U-17 sides all doing the business, but the Cloonacauneen outfit gained two more points with the U-15 and second XV coming out on top.The two U-13 sides won one game apiece to cancel each other out.

The Ladies were up next and with the visitors leading the overall contest by one point, the home side required a half point to keep their hopes alive for the final match.

This they duly did running in for two late try’s late in the game to gain a draw at the death in what was very exciting contest.

As in latter outings it was again all down to the senior game to decide the destination of the Glynn Cup, and all that Corinthians required was a draw to retain the trophy with the Langan Trophy already in the bag.

Both sides started understrength, and ’Wegians were first on the score after the visitors backline got caught for running off side but with the ball in hand fullback Dara Leader kicked a peach of a drop goal.

Just before the break Corinthians got in for an opportunist try with scrum-half Mick O’Flynn going on the blind side to pop the ball to second row Gary Warde to get in for the score.
