Corinthians made it two from two n the Ulster Bank League Division 2b on Saturday with a tremendous first half performance helping them to a 32-7 victory over City of Derry at Corinthian Park.
Having accounted for Midleton last week, and finishing second in the Connacht Senio0r League, the Galway side met the Ulster challenge head on early and had the four try bonus point notched up by half time in a scintillating display of attacking rugby.
Former Coláiste Iognáid centre Bryan Dixon has broken into the first team at just 18 and is a revelation at centre. He scored two tries in that dramatic first-half, the other two scores came from the ever-impressive Darren Classens.
Classens second try will live in the memory as it came from a brilliantly judged crossfield kick from the in-from Conor Murphy at out-half and finished with a full length dive catch and score from the South African. They travel to Seapoint this weekend.
In Division 1b there has been contrasting fortunes for the two Connacht clubs. Buccaneers are with the front runners after securing their second successive victory away to Ballymena at the weekend but Galwegians are without a point at the bottom after they lost 21-12 away to a strong Bruff.
Two early Tadgh Leader penalties had them 6-0 ahead early doors, but Bruff led 11-6 at half time thanks to John Shine’s try and while Leader kicked his side back in front after half time a late try, again from Shine, sealed the win for the Limerick men. Next up for ’Wegians is a tough home clash with Belfast Harlequins.
Peter Bracken will be pleased with the start to the season from his Connemara side in Division 2b. While they lost 27-22 away to Boyne at the weekend, the losing bonus point was a consolation. They trailed 17-9 at the break but second half tries from Benny Bester and Alan Keogh had them in front at one stage.
The ‘All Blacks’ host Ards next weekend and the young Galway side already look a team full of confidence and determined to make some major strides in the league this season.
Sligo have had a tough start to life in that league as they followed on from a narrow home loss to Boyne in round one with defeat to Navan last Saturday.
