The Carnmore airport is to be downgraded to a category two status when Aer Arann suspends flights to and from the facility next Tuesday.
Around seven or eight staff will be kept on to to maintain the airport as it moves into accommodating general aviation.
Councillor Liam Carroll who is on the board of Galway airport, says it's a very dark day for Galway.
Airport managing director Joe Walsh will step down from his position next month as he has secured a post abroad.
Liam Carroll could not confirm if he will be replaced.
