Nurses say that consistently high numbers awaiting beds in University Hospital Galway are pressurising the emergency department.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation says consistently high numbers are more damaging than sudden spikes. The numbers on trolleys in UHG have not fallen below 30 this year, and the INMO says that patient care is suffering.

Patients who are on trolleys have been seen by emergency doctors and admitted, but there are no beds available for them.

Ann Burke of the INMO says there hasn't been any let up.
