Connemara Community Ambulance Grounded

Galway bay Fm Newsroom

A community ambulance, which was a pioneering service in west Connemara, can no longer function because of more stringent health service regulations.

The Order of Malta ambulance in Carna - which is situated almost 80 kilometres west of Galway city -is effectively grounded after being kept in service for 20 years by local people in a voluntary capacity.

Dr Michael Casey who played a key role in establishing the service in the early 1990s says that its virtually impossible for local people to achieve the new level of qualifications that are needed.
