A 38 year old city man has escaped a prison sentence for growing cannabis plants in his home without a licence. Andrew Joyce, of 13 Barr Aille, Glenanail, Tuam Road Galway, could have to carry out 130 hours of community service in lieu of a four month prison sentence if a Community Service Report goes in his favour. Andrew Joyce pleaded guilty at Galway District court this week to cultivating cannabis plants without a licence in two bedrooms at his home on April 2nd 2006. He also pleaded guilty to being found in possession of a small quantity of the drug on the same date. Garda Brian Mulderrig told the court he found the plants flourishing thanks to paraphernalia to help them grow, such as lights, fans, water and fertiliser. He said he seized all of the equipment - and the plants. It was accepted by Garda Mulderrig that Joyce was not growing the plants for sale or supply to others.
