The Galway public is being asked for submissions on the official Irish language version of over four thousand place names throughout the county.

It's part of an initiative led by the Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Dinny McGinley which aims to give Irish place names equal legal status.

The Commission has published a draft of the proposed versions of a list of over 4 thousand placesnames in Galway on the website www.ahg.ie

The list excludes the county's gaeltacht areas which have already been through a similar process carried out in 2004 detailing over 600 such administrative placenames.

The deadline for submissions is the first week in December.
