Classic songs from Ireland and Europe

Music for Galway presents an evening with Irish star soprano Ailish Tynan on Tuesday next, April 13 at the Aula Maxima, NUI, Galway.
Accompanied by British pianist Christopher Glynn, she has devised a special programme for Galway themed A Woman’s Love and Life.
The inspiration is taken from Schumann’s song cycle of the same name.
The evening draws together very different aspects of song starting with a group of classical arrangements of traditional Irish songs including such all time favourites as Britten’s arrangement of Down by the Salley Gardens and Herbert Hughes’ arrangement of The Gartan Mother’s Lullaby. Through a group of poems by James Joyce set to music by composers such as Samuel Barber and John Cage we get a flavour of twentieth century song before returning to the romantic Lieder of Schumann for the second half of the programme.
Ailish Tynan gave the first ever and hugely successful Members’ Surprise Concert and Music for Galway is delighted to welcome her back. She was born in Mullingar, and studied at Trinity College, the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. In 2003 Ailish won the Rosenblatt Recital Prize at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Her recent opera engagements have included the Royal Swedish Opera and Opéra de Rouen.
Tickets €20; Members & Concessions €16; Students €6.
