A city council official has described the discovery of a dead horse near a city centre playground this morning as "entirely unacceptable".

The horse's remains were found within 20 metres of the playground in the Glenbawn housing estate.

Speaking to Galway Bay FM News Director of Services for the Environment Kevin Swift said the problem of roaming horses has worsened over the last few months.

Galway Gardai were called to the scene last evening and said a vet had to put the horse down after it ate a poisonous weed.

The city council has begun an investigation to find out the owner of the horse, which has since been removed from the scene.

Earlier Labour City Cllr Niall McNeilis called for the local authorities to crack down on city council tenants keeping horses in housing estates.
