City councillors have voted to provide water filters to all houses affected by the lead contamination, but the city manager has said no to the plan. After three and a half hours of heated debate in front of fifty residents of Old Mervue, councillors unanimously voted to provide filtration for the 251 affected houses in Old Mervue. They also passed a second motion to provide filters for all affected areas in the city, including Shantalla, The Claddagh and Bohermore. However City Manager Joe McGrath then told the packed chamber he cannot comply with their motions. He said he didn't want the people of Old Mervue to leave with the impression the council could provide water filtersHe stated emphatically the city council would NOT be providing water filters as he didn't know the cost and had to seek legal advice from the EPA and his legal advisors. The manager did say he'd get back to the council on Monday week [nov 24] with a report from the consultants engaged to look at the lead contamination problem.
