Date Published: 30-Oct-2011

Thousands are expected to attend a special ceremony in the city this evening to welcome home Galway President Elect Michael D Higgins.

The Labour candidate and former Galway TD secured over 1 million votes at the final count in Dublin castle last evening.

Mr Higgins hosted a reception at the Mansion House last night for members of his campaign team.

This evening's city homecoming takes place in the Meyrick Hotel on Eyre Square at half past four.

Galway West Labour TD Derek Nolan says everyone is welcome to join in the celebrations on what he describes as a very proud day for Galway and Ireland.
