City demonstration makes call to reform Protection of Life during Pregnancy Act

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A demonstration will get underway in the city this evening calling for a change to the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Act. It's one of many protests being led by pro-choice groups across Ireland – and in London and Berlin. The city demonstration is organized by Galway Pro-Choice and NUI Galway's Choice Society. It follows the case of a suicidal migrant woman who claimed she was denied an abortion, and had her baby delivered by C section at around 25 weeks. The HSE is due to publish the terms of reference for its investigation into the case shortly, which will look at what intervention was carried out after she found out she was 8 weeks pregnant. In a statement today, the HSE said any inference that it misled anyone during the 8-22 week period of the woman's pregnancy is wrong. The Galway protest will take place in Eyre Square at 6 this evening. Sarah McCarthy of Galway Pro-Choice says many people are outraged at the woman's alleged treatment.
