CITY COUNCILLORS DEBATE FLOODING ISSUES

Date Published: 29-Jan-2013
Galway city received the brunt of heavy rainfall in a short period yesterday with 12 to 24 millimetres recorded per hour during the heaviest morning deluge.
Director of Services with Galway City Council Ciaran Hayes told Cllrs last evening that very few drainage systems would have been able to deal with the volume of rainfall and complimented crews in their prompt response.
He was responding to comments from Cllr Padraig Conneely who said there was “no tsunami in Galway” but rather a “heavy shower” and claimed that the city is left exposed when it gets heavy rain.
Cllr Niall Mc Nelis said crews were out within minutes and said Quay Street was one of the areas affected by sewage.
Mr Hayes told Cllrs that an overall flooding plan is being put together headed by the Office of Public Works.
