A city councillor has defended her stance on city cyclists following criticisms from the Galway Cycling Campaign.

Councillor Terry O'Flaherty raised concerns about cyclists using Shop St following the knocking down of an elderly woman recently.

Campaigners say her words are inconsistent with her actions following her approval of the Doughiska Road redevelopment scheme.

Councillor O'Flaherty has hit back however saying she encourages people to cycle in the city but only in designated areas.

The city council has confirmed that it's illegal to cycle through the pedestrianised Shop St from Williamsgate Street to Mainguard Street.
