Galway city council is to seek extra funding of up to €4 million from the Department of Transport to cover the cost overrun of the Seamus Quirke Road project.

At an unprecedented meeting this afternoon between city manager Joe O'Neill, Director of Services for Transport Ciaran Hayes and the party whips, it was revealed that the true cost of the overruns lies between €5-6 million.

The project had originally been costed at €10 million.

The city manager also indicated the project is still expected to finish by the end of next March.
