Galway City Council has refuted claims that 5.5 million euro is still owed on the Eyre Square Refurbishment Scheme.

It follows criticism by City Cllr Padraig Conneely that the project is still " a monkey on the back" of the local authority, after a local government auditor report stated it cost 15.3 million euro.

A spokesperson for the City Council says the remaining 5.5 million referenced in the report is a capital balance in the project and will be funded out of future revenue streams.

The spokesperson adds that it's simply an accounting issue and no-one is owed money on the project.
