City Council Chief urged to reconsider deadline for community submissions on Knocknacarra Centre

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Chief Executive of Galway City Council is being urged to extend the deadline for community submissions for the operation of Knocknacarra Community Centre. It follows a meeting last night attended by six local councillors and 30 representatives of local groupings to debate the future running of the facility. Last month it was agreed that community groups would be given an opportunity to tender for the management of the centre with a deadline for submissions of August 1st. Concerns had previously been raised regarding the privitisation of the centre's management. However Cllr Catherine Connolly who was one of those who attended last evening's meeting says this deadline for community submissions is not feasable and must be extended. She also says the criteria set for tendering is not ‘community friendly'. Speaking on Galway Talks, Cllr Connolly says steps are already being taken to get community groups working together to discuss a bid.
