The US health service company CIGNA is closing its Loughrea office with the loss of all 180 jobs. Staff were told at a meeting this evening. The office will close in June, with lay-offs beginning in March. CIGNA processes health insurance for the US healthcare market and is one of the biggest employers in Loughrea. The company is blaming the global economic downturn. Speaking to Galway Bay FM News from Connecticut CIGNA spokesperson Joe Mondy explained why they're closing the Loughrea base. Responding to the news of the CIGNA closure this evening Mayor of Galway Peter Feeney said it will be a disaster for the Loughrea economy.
