There are fears that cancer services and warfarin clinics at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe are to be wound down as part of a cost saving plan.

It follows this week's meeting of the Health Service Executive where cost containment measures for the HSE west were discussed.

The warfarin clinic in Portiuncula provides treatment for heart conditions with over 90 patients scheduled to attend next week.

The oncology unit provides services such as chemotherapy to cancer patients.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Padraig Mulligan of IMPACT trade union says both units have been targeted for possible closure.
