Over two thirds of parents surveyed in the HSE West region claim none of the sports clubs their children attend has a policy on mouthguards.

The study, published by the Irish dental association, also revealed that one in 20 primary school children suffer dental injuries while playing sport.

The survey was targeted at children between 9 and 13 years of age across 25 randomly selected schools in the HSE West region.

The report states that dentists and individual practitioners should promote mouthguard use for children during sport and be advocates for the development of policies in schools and sporting organisations.
