Loughrea councillors have vowed to continue the campaign for a swimming pool in the town.

This is despite the withdrawel of 1.7 million euro Government grant for the project.

This month's council meeting was told that after a joint venture for a pool complex on the Athenry Road had fallen through, no other proposal had been submitted to Galway County Council even though planning permission had been granted for a 25 metre pool at Mount Pleasant.

Cllr Gabriel Burke who is Chairman of the Pool Committe said they were surprised they never received any letter notifying them that the government grant of 1.7 million euro was withdrawn.

He was adamant that the monies collected in Loughrea over the years would not go to any other project except the swimming pool.
