CALL TO TACKLE DRINKING ON CITY STREETS

Concerns have been raised by policing committee members over the level of uncontrolled drinking on city streets and in city homes.

Cllr Nuala Nolan questioned whether it was ok to drink on city centre streets if plastic glasses were used.

She said that on Wednesday and Thursday student nights, public order offences are happening and nobody is challenging these people.

City Mayor Terry O'Flaherty said cheap alcohol is widely available and people are buying it and causing a nuisance to neighbours with house parties.

Garda Superintendent Marie Skehill said the law was strictly enforced for recent Arthurs Day celebrations and a glass free zone was observed.

Chief Superintendent Michael O'Sullivan told members that drinking on city streets is only permitted where a licensed premises has a certain outdoor area.

He said drinking on public streets will not be tolerated by gardai.
