Galway City Council is being urged to follow Waterford's lead in removing the Occupy protest camp.

The encampment has been situated on Eyre Square for nearly six months now as part of a global campaign against corporate greed.

City Councillor Padraig Conneely says a similar protest camp located on the Quayside in Waterford was removed a number of weeks ago during a 40 minute overnight operation by the local authority.

Last month [March] the Occupy Dame Street camp was dismantled during a dawn raid and this was followed by the Cork camp, where protestors removed their tents voluntarily.

Speaking on Galway Talks, Cllr Conneely says Waterford's lead must be followed by the authorities in Galway to dismantle what he describes as the city's "shanty town".
