CALL TO EXAMINE TRAFFIC SAFETY IN CITY SUBURBS

Date Published: 11-Oct-2012
A pedestrian advocacy group is calling for a fresh focus on traffic safety issues in the Rahoon-Knocknacarra area.
Cosain, which carried out four surveys, found that 9 out of 10 vehicles observed were breaking the 50 kilometre per hour limit.
Meanwhile, nearly one-third of motorists in the June surveys were noted as driving at 65 kilometres per hour or faster.
The group had hoped the study would come before this week's Joint Policing Committee meeting but noted its disappointment after the matter was referred to a traffic sub-group which has failed to hold regular meetings to date.
Simon Comer of the Cosain group is calling for official speed surveillance in the area as well as an audit of existing infrastructure to assess the quality of the walking and cycling environment.
He is now urging the traffic sub-group to meet and discuss the findings as soon as possible so that appropriate action can be taken
