CALL FOR CLAMPDOWN ON ALCOHOL ADVERTISING IN CITY

A senior city official has called for a clamp-down on alcohol advertising in the city.
City Manager Joe O'Neill says Galway could take the lead in making a submission on the banning of alcohol promotion as is the case in many other countries.
Speaking at this week's meeting of the Joint Policing Committee, he provided an example of the Heineken Cup which in France is referred to as the "H" cup.
His comments comes as a Department of Health group has recommended that sponsorship of sport and other large events by the drinks industry be phased out.
Garda Chief Superintendant Michael O'Sullivan also told members that excessive alcohol consumption fuels many types of crime, including public order offences.
City Manager Joe O'Neill says cigarette advertising was successfully banned and alcohol should follow suit.
