Ballinasloe's Hawthorne House intellectual disability residence is to reopen by the end of this month.

The facility which operates under the remit of the East Galway Mental Health Service, provides 24 hour support for individuals with varying degrees of intellectual disability and mental health needs.

Its closure last week triggered significant concern, with SIPTU highlighting its fear that the move could create overcrowded environments elsewhere in the Ballinasloe service and remove privacy for users.

However, the HSE says the move is to facilitate an upgrade by the landlord in order to meet required standards.

It is expected that the residence will reopen by the end of this month.
