Atlantic Pirates to storm the Town Hall for Cro’

Date Published: 29-Mar-2012
Folk group the Atlantic Pirates will bring their distinctive sound to the Town Hall Theatre on Saturday, April 7 in aid of Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation.
Having honed their craft busking on the streets of Cork, Dublin and Galway, the Atlantic Pirates have developed into an up-and-coming big-time act, with plenty of rousing ballads and chant-along songs.
The band was formed a few short years ago when singer James Gallagher and guitarist Wayne Wilder decided to busk for a living. A chance encounter on the streets of Galway led to the meeting of the next band member, when James heard a distinctive banjo style that reminded him of the one and only Pecker Dunne. The banjo player turned out to be Pecker’s son Stephen or as he is fondly called ‘Pecker Jnr’. Pecker Jnr was invited to play along at a session that afternoon and half-way through, became a fully-fledged member of the band.
The final member of the Atlantic Pirates, Iven Markquard, a travelling minstrel from Germany, who encountered the band on his way home to Germany and decided to stay.
With James’s passionate singing, Wayne’s edgy, driving guitar, Stephen’s diverse banjo style and Iven’s gentle fiddling, the Atlantic Pirates have a sound all of their own.
Galwegians will have their first opportunity to see the Atlantic Pirates on the main stage at the Town Hall Theatre on April 7 at 8pm. Tickets cost €20 and are available from The Town Hall Theatre on with all proceeds in aid of Croí. Visit www.tht.ie or call 091 569777 to book your tickets.
