Athenry Oranmore councillors criticise distribution of roads funding
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Members of the Athenry-Oranmore municipal district have hit out at the distribution of road restoration funding in the county. Cathaoirleach Peter Feeney has described the allocation of just over 59 thousand euro out of a 758 thousand euro fund as ‘unacceptable.' The funding was an additional allocation from a national fund of 12 million euro towards surface restoration works under the Restoration Improvement Programme. The money is allocated on a per kilometer basis across each municipal district. At this week's municipal district meeting Councillors Martina Kinane and James Charity expressed concerns relating to the growing population of the district and the need for quality roads. Director of Services Michael Raftery defended the distribution and said 100 thousand euro of the total had been ringfenced for a project in the Loughrea district.
