A 32 year old man likened by his own solicitor to the Scarlet Pimpernel for evading Gardai for five years, has been remanded in custody.

Galway District Court heard this week how Gardai had been looking for Joseph Jennings, with addresses in Tysaxon, Athenry and Rahylin Glebe, Galway since 2004.

Joseph Jennings was eventually arrested this week on foot of a Bench Warrant issued by a judge in 2005, and was brought before Galway District Court.

His solicitor, Gearoid Geraghty said his client was like the Scarlet Pimpernel but the Gardai could have picked him up any month in Athenry.

Gardai said they had been looking for him between 2005 and 2008 but to no avail.

Inspector Pat McHugh said Jennings had given a false name and date of birth to a garda when charged with drunken driving and dangerous driving in 2004.

Jennings also faces charges of tendering a dud 700 euro cheque at Center Jewellers at Orantown Center to buy a gold chain and ring for himself.

Judge Mary Fahy remanded Jennings in custody to next Monday’s court for hearing.
