A post mortem examination was carried out last evening on a 60-years-old man who took ill at Galway Garda Station in the early hours of yesterday morning and who died shortly after at University Hospital Galway (UHG).
The man has been named by the Office of the Garda Ombudsman as Sean O’Driscoll with an address of 13 Market Street – he was pronounced dead at UHG at 5.42am yesterday.
He had been arrested by Galway Gardaí in the city centre area at 1.20am yesterday and was detained at a cell in Mill Street Station.
However at around 4.55am, Gardaí discovered that the man was feeling unwell and medical assistance was sought – an ambulance arrived shortly after and the man was removed to UHG.
In accordance with standard practice, the Garda Commissioner referred the case to the Office of the Garda Ombudsman, under Section 102 of the Garda Siochana Act, 2005.
A spokesman for the Garda Ombudsman told the Sentinel that a post mortem examination of the dead man was due to be carried out last evening by a local pathologist.
The Sentinel understands that, subject to post mortem confirmation, it seems likely that the late Mr O’Driscoll died from natural causes.
