APPEALS BOARD OVERTURNS GO AHEAD FOR KILCOLGAN DEVELOPMENT

Date Published: 02-Jan-2009
A major mixed-use development, which was originally given the go-ahead for Kilcolgan, has now been blocked by the Appeals Board.Walter King was granted planning permission for 56 homes, a creche, shops and offices at Main Street, Kilcolgan. However appeals against the development were lodged with An Bord Pleanála, which has overruled the County Council and refused permission. The appeals argued that the mixed use development would impair agricultural activities in the area, particularly horse breeding. The appeals also argued that the road network in Kilcolgan is inadequate to cater for such a development.Another claim made by the objectors is that the development would give rise to criminality in the area. The Appeals Board has ruled that the scale of the proposed development would constitute excessive density. The Board also states that it would be premature pending a Development Plan for Kilcolgan and the deficiency in public services and community facilities. Finally in refusing to allow the Kilcolgan development go ahead, the Board states that it would result in an unacceptable risk of pollution of groundwater.
