There's been strong criticism of Gort's new pay and display parking system. It came into operation yesterday, with motorists having to pay 1 euro per hour up to a maximum of two hours on most streets. The owners of business premises in Gort town centre are not entitled to a parking permit but residents ARE allowed a parking permit. There is currently no public long-stay car park in Gort with the exception of 50 spaces on Church St which are full today. Gort chamber of Commerce spokesperson Gerry Finnerty says the county council still isn't acting on their suggestions of three potential sites for a long-stay car parkSenior Engineer with Galway county council Martin Lavelle said motorists just have to get used to "maximising the use of the road network"
