Amphitheatre and sportsground proposal for Lough Atalia

An ambitious proposal to create a new sportsground, running track and amphitheatre on open land at Lough Atalia will be considered as part of the new City Development Plan.
The ‘wellness and cultural space’ has been included in a submission on the current Draft Plan for 2017-23 which is being discussed by councillors at the moment.
The land behind the Huntsman – regularly used as a shortcut to the Dublin Road – is owned by Terry Fahy, principal of Yeats College on College Road, which are already zoned for Recreation and Amenity use.
Mr Fahy wants a specific objective included in the new Development Plan to allow for a planning application for his proposal.
The plans include a 200 metre kerbed running track with a stone dust or grass finish and an additional 200m of walking trails; a multi-purpose sports field; an amphitheatre and stage; peripheral grass zoned for stretching and exercise areas; a building with a viewing platform of Lough Atalia, toilets and dressing rooms.
