Almost three thousand homes in county Galway will be targeted in the first wave of septic tank inspections.

That's according to figures revealed in the Irish Independent which show that 16 thousand households in the West pose a risk.

Two thousand 890 septic tanks have been identified in the Clarin/Kilcolgan area of Galway which is bordered by Oranmore, Loughrea, Athenry and Gortmore.

These homes are likely to be targeted in the first raft of inspections which begin next year.
