ALGAL BLOOM AFFECTING MARINE LIFE ACROSS GALWAY SUBSIDES

Date Published: 14-Aug-2012
The algal bloom which impacted on marine life along the west coast has finally begun to subside.
The bloom- karenia mikiomatoi- is naturally occuring and is not harmful to humans.
In Galway Bay, a shellfish hatchery in the area reported difficulty in settlement of their shellfish larvae while sea anglers reported low fish catches along the west and northern coasts.
The most recent satellite imagery and seawater samples analysed by the Marine Insititute in Oranmore show a signifcant decrease in the bloom compared to recent weeks.
