The youngest ever Chairman of Galway County Council wants to make transparency and accountability his twin priorities for his term in office.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Albert Dolan from Monivea was elected the new Cathaoirleach of the local authority at a meeting that was also attended by Oireachtas members, senior executives as well as Chief Executive Liam Conneally.

He was vocal in his ambitions for the next five years – despite being the youngest ever elected to the position, at the age of 25.

Galway Bay FM broadcaster Ollie Turner (FG) was elected vice-chairman, having won a seat at his first attempt in the Tuam Municipal Council area.

A pact had earlier been agreed by Fianna Fail and Fine Gael along with six independents to run the local authority for the next five years

Fine Gael have 13 seats, Fianna Fail eleven – and the six independents give them a stranglehold on power.

Cllr Dolan described Galway as a county like no other, ‘rich in culture, history, and natural beauty. It is a place marked by innovation, resilience, and a strong sense of community spirit’.

“As we embark on this journey together, our collective duty is clear: to address the challenges we face and to enhance the quality of life for all our citizens,” he said.

“This is a responsibility we must embrace with dedication, transparency, and accountability,” he added.

He told his fellow councillors that he was committed to working closely with each of them.

“Rather than setting out specific aims or objectives today, I pledge to listen to the issues that matter most to our constituents and to ensure that our council plays its part in delivering high-quality services,” he said.

“Our focus will be on tackling the challenges before us with optimism and determination, whether it’s improving infrastructure, supporting local businesses, enhancing public services, or improving our transport options.

“Galway is special not just because of its scenic landscapes and rich heritage, but because of the people who call it home.

“Our role as councillors is to harness the strengths of our county, fostering an environment where every citizen can thrive. We must work together, setting aside differences and focusing on our shared goal of creating a better future for all.

“As Cathaoirleach, my vision for the year ahead is one of unity and progress. By working collaboratively, we can achieve great things for Galway.

“Let us celebrate our successes, learn from our experiences, and strive to make our county a better place for future generations.

“I invite each of you to bring your unique perspectives, ideas, and passion to our collective efforts,” Cllr Dolan added.
