Ahascragh's Ronan Mullen has been re-elected to the Seanad

The Independent Senator was elected on the 24th count of the NUI panel, having topped the poll.

Cancer specialist Professor John Crown and outgoing Independent Senator Feargal Quinn took the other two seats, which were voted for by NUI graduates.

Galway Green Niall O'Brolcháin says he will take a break from politics after losing his Seanad seat this afternoon.

The city Senator, who ran unsuccessfully in the General Election, was eliminated at the 16th count of the NUI Seanad elections.

NUI Galway lecturer, Donncha O’Connell was also eliminated from the race at the 21st count with over 2 thousand 300 votes, a strong showing for a first time candidate.
