Up to 220 public sector workers in Galway face losing their jobs as the city and county council cut short-term posts to cope with the recession. Galway county council is 'reviewing' 205 contract positions this year. A spokesperson for the city council has confirmed 15 short-term contracts due to end this year won't be renewed. They added that any other vacancies which arise, including leave without pay or maternity leave, will be dealt with on a case by case basis. Galway county manager Martina Moloney indicated the housing and planning departments are most likely to be affected within the county council.
