There's been a 20 percent fall in planning applications and new buildings in Galway.

That's according to the latest report on housing construction which ranks Galway at number five for the worst performing counties from January to October of this year.

Nationally, the report shows a fall of 18 per cent for planning applications for the first 10 months of this year, compared to 2011.

It also shows the number of new projects is down 9 per cent.

However the team of researchers for the fifth national housing cosntruction index says although figures for planning applications and new buildings are falling, things are starting to improve.

Danny O'Shea from the research company Link2Plans says the drop is slowing down, which indicates we're near the bottom of the slump
