Just over 13 hundred Galway households have registered for the septic tank charge to date.

The central bureau is also processing a recent influx of 6 thousand 500 additional registrations nationwide and expects the Galway figure to increase as a result.

So far, Cork Council Council has recorded the highest compliance rate with 2 thousand 153 domestic water treatment systems registered.

The charge is part of the scheme introduced by the Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan ahead of inspections, which could see many householders forced to carry out upgrades to their systems.

Nationally, just 30-thousand of the country's 500-thousand septic tank and other waste-water treatment system owners have registered their tanks, with less than a month to go until the mandatory 5 euro fee is upped to 50 euro.

Galway West TD and Fianna Fail Spokesperson on Agriculture, Eamon O'Cuiv says a grant must be made available before households should be made to register by the February deadline.
