One hundred artists including John Behan, Gertrude Degenhart, Mick Flaherty, Barrie Maguire, Jay Murphy and John Coll have come together to lend their support to Inis Aoibhinn, the recently opened cancer care facility in Galway City. Inis Aoibhinn was built using public funding and voluntary donations to provide accommodation and support services for those receiving cancer treatment. The 30 bedroomed residence which was designed in the style of a large country house is located on the University Hospital Campus in Newcastle, and it allows patients to have privacy and independence while being near the hospital and medical services. It is designed to be as comfortable and as homely as possible and as part of this, the Kenny Gallery decided that they would help to decorate it. They wrote to some 100 artists, asking for their support and got a great response.According to Conor Kenny, almost all the works of art in the collection were donated by their creators, while the remainder were gifts from individuals. Sixty of the works were framed at reduced cost by John and Martin Maloney, while a catalogue for the collection was compiled by Dean Kelly. This wonderful collection of art will be officially opened this evening Friday, September 14 at 4.30pm and the guest speaker is John O’Donohue.
